Creed Taylor Produced

I was fortunate enough to hear and see Mr Malone at Dazzle in Denver in September 2023 as part of the Ron Carter, Donald Vega, Russell Malone – Golden Striker Trio. It was both fitting an extremely sad that I awoke yesterday to an email from Mr Ron Carter, announcing that Russell Malone had died.

The email said simply:

It included a picture of a empty chair on a stage – Mr Carter noted that “in respect and honor of the memory Mr. Malone … this chair represents his presence.”

I’ve been trying to be more present at live concerts, which means not spending a lot of time taking pictures and videos that for the most part I’ll never use. This was the only picture I took that night, apart from a picture of the stage monitor camera while while we were waiting to get in. Mr Malone would sit on the right.

WGBO has a bio sketch and details about Russell Malone ^[1]https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/art-of-the-story/2024-08-26/wbgo-archive-remembering-the-musical-roots-of-the-late-russell-malone.

A GoFundme has been set up to cover expenses and to help his family. I’ve made a small donation and they’ll nearly hit their target. If you can, please help them past it.

CTI All-Stars

Russelll Malone appeared twice in the final farewell of the CTI All-Stars, in the 2009 and 2010 editions. Here is the video from the Creed Taylor produced 2009 edition, and Kim Paris emailed me to remind me he has the audio from the 2010 concert on the FM Radio Archive on archive.org. I do have video of that performance and am trying to workout the best way to share it. In the meantime, enjoy these two Russell Malone performances.

For the archive.org audio, you can stream it from here. You can also click through by selecting this icon on the play stream and download the stream for offline use. Kim Paris has collected a great collection of recordings you can explore as well.
